The Department of Health and Human Services, executive department of the United States federal government, charged with administering a wide range of programs in the fields of health care and social services. Established in 1979, the department is headed by the secretary of health and human services, who is appointed by the president with the approval of the Senate and who is a member of the Cabinet. The department has six major divisions: The Administration for Children and Families provides services to promote the healthy development of children, youth, and families. The Adminstration on Aging administers grants for state and local programs that serve older Americans. The Health Care Financing Administration operates Medicare and the federal portion of Medicaid. The Social Security Administration (SSA) is in charge of Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance. The Public Health Service works to protect the physical and mental health of the population; two of its most important units are the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Family Support Administration plans, directs, and coordinates programs that assist needy families.
Aerobics, exercises that help to increase cardiovascular fitness by improving the body's use of oxygen and allowing the heart to work less strenuously. Popular aerobic activities include aerobic exercise programs, walking, running, cycling, swimming, and dancing. Typical aerobic exercise programs include about 20 minutes of vigorous continuous exercise three to five times per week. A medical examination is recommended before beginning an aerobics program.
